Together, we make a great farming team. |
Why Do We Farm? When we introduce ourselves as farmers, we typically get one of two responses: “How wonderful to be able to work with the earth!” or “ Isn’t that an awful lot of work?” Yes, it is an incredible amount of work, and during the summer it seems as though it will never end. Sixteen- or eighteen-hour days are the norm, but we force ourselves to take Monday afternoons off to relax. Nevertheless, it is truly wonderful to work in the soil, to nurture all the different crops along and to enjoy the satisfaction of feeding our family and so many others fresh, healthy food. Like all boys, Mike loves his tractors. (Farming might just be an excuse for driving tractors!) He’s always proud of his big basil patch and fantasizes about growing giant pumpkins. Shelley is the animal lover and will freely admit that growing all these vegetables is just a way to justify keeping livestock. She enjoys growing as many varieties of each crop as possible (especially squash and greens), and learning and sharing the differences between them all. So, you can see that our farm is really an extension of our personalities. We each love all that we do here, and doing it together is the best of all worlds.
